Verstappen Nearly Kills Lewis Hamilton In Terrifying Crash

I first want to start off this article by saying that both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton walked away safely from this crash. In today’s Italian Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Max Verstappen were battling for position and most importantly points as both drivers battled for the top spot as the 2021 Formula One season winds down. For several laps both drivers would make runs on each other, but going into a very tight corner with Hamilton in front of Verstappen disaster would happen as Verstappen's Red Bull car went airborne and all 1600 lbs of it would land right on top of Hamilton’s car, more specifically where his exposed head was. Formula One cars have open cockpits that are very similar to those on IndyCars, leaving the drivers exposed to flying objects and weather. Over the past several years in both F1 and IndyCars have experienced driver injuries and sadly even deaths due to the openness of the driver.

To help cope with that both series have come out with a protective layer to ensure more safety, more Formula One they introduced the Halo. When the halo first came out it was seen as being very ugly and big, but since it’s release it has been credited with saving driver’s lives. When Verstappen landed on Hamilton his rear tire was right over the head with the other parts of the car to the side of Hamilton. This would be without a doubt a driver death if it was not for the halo as Max Verstappen’s car would have literally crushed Lewis Hamilton’s head. Overall Hamilton walked away ok with a sore neck being the biggest thing to affect him. Now this all happened because once again Lewis Hamilton was being the cocky driver he is and did not leave Verstappen a single inch of space, sending him wide into the turn. When Verstappen went wide his car hit one of the speed bumps, making the car go airborne.

- The officials would later put the fault on Verstappen, giving him a three place grid penalty for the Russia GP.
