The Stafford Motor Speedway is entering into the 2022 racing season in late April. The season starts off with opening day on a Saturday, followed by the 50th running of the Spring Sizzler on the 24th. The track is coming off of an action packed and historic year for racing and it looks to get even more intense in ‘22. Coming into the racing season the track has several drivers moving up or switching teams along with new drivers entering for the first time, but for every weekly division there will always be stand out drivers. This week NYSS Race Day is featuring the SK Light division at the track.
Listed below is a list of the top three drivers of the SK Light division at the track along with an honorable mention, the list is based on sole stats.
1 - Bob Charland finished the 2021 season top five in the SK Light standings, placing fourth. That points standing finish becomes even more impressive due to the fact he went winless. Bob Charland had 0 wins, but 8 Top5s and 17 Top10s had him just 66-points back on Derek Debbis who had 7 wins and coming in front of George Bessette Jr. who had two wins on the season. Charland showed pure consistency throughout the season showing that winning is not everything in the sport of auto racing.
2 - Brian Sullivan had a p2 points finish, tied for the points lead; he lost the championship due to the win count. Sullivan crossed the finish line leading the open-wheeled car pack a total of four times. When not winning Sullivan came in the Top5 13 times and out of 20 features he finished inside the Top10 a total of 18 times.
3 - George Bessette Jr. got career win(s) one and two in the SKL division this past racing season, the ‘Mad Pup’ is slowly turning into the ‘Mad Dog’ at the track. Bessette missed out on a top five points finish by 22-points, 11 Top5s and 15 Top10s proved to lead the standings from 6th place on back to 47th when it comes to finishes. Bessette is coming into the 2022 season as a quiet contender for the championship, outside looking in can the young gun from Danbury be top in the SKLs?
HM - Norm Sears is a household name in the northeast racing community, his three back-to-back-to-back Street Stock (DARE Stock) championship wins (2006-2008) sealed his name in Stafford Speedway history. Since switching to SK Lights in 2015 Norm Sears saw little success at the beginning with stats from 2015-2020 (71 races) showing 0 wins, 5 Top5s and 20 Top10s. 2021 was a year on a different note, Norm Sears was storming through the pack, though winless he collected a top 5 finish along with 12 Top10s. Those finishes came in 19 total races out of the 20 total ran last season, despite missing a race Norm Sears still tied for 10th place in the standings (Shown in 11th due to win count) in 2021. Sears can easily be a contender for a race win this upcoming season along with a points finish around 7th-10th place.
